Building Transitional Housing for Families

One of Four New Family Rooms
     Family Harbor House has 3-4 family sleeping rooms. (Two can be joined for a larger family.) Here, the process of furnishing this room has begun.

     A brand-new kitchen/laundry room has been completed and is ready for use.

     This common room will be set up for families to eat their meals and for daytime activities.

Getting Ready for Final Painting
     Joe Calista, an MMHC board member, and also a trustee of Belfast United Methodist Church, is filing holes in the wall left from previous wall hangings, In a day or two, these walls will be painted.

The Kitchen is Coming Together!
     The sink is now in, the stove and refrigerator are ready to install, and the washer/dryer will be in place by the end of the day. Here, Kevin and Sean, of Whitecap Builders, are finalizing the vent pipe for the kitchen stovetop ventilator.

Wall Are Being Painted!
     Paul Kendrick of Topline Painting has volunteered to use his professional skills to help with other volunteers to paint all the walls of the new facility -- four living units, a common room, a kitchen, office, two bathrooms, and the hallway. Here, Paul is nearly finished with one of the living units.

Finishing the Baseboard
     Tony, a professional floorer, just finished adding vinyl baseboard in the hallway and the living units, and now is repairing the kitchen floor along one of the base cabinets. Soon, the floors will be polished and the kitchen appliances will be installed.

The Walls Are All Up
     Here is one of the family living spaces, with a new wall installed, power completed, waiting for paint, floor cleaning, and furniture.

Family Harbor House Construction
     On August 11, Whitecap Builders started transforming much of the lower level of Belfast United Methodist Church into transitional housing units for four families. Changes include erecting two walls – one to ensure that each family has a private room, and the other wall will separate Family Harbor House from the rest of the lower level of the church. They are also installing two showers, a stove, a washer, and a dryer.

     The walls are done and the cabinets are in. The kitchen still needs a sink and appliances.

     Board member Joe Calista, also a trustee of Belfast United Methodist Church, headed up a refurbishment of this playground which is just behind the new Family Harbor House facilities.

     Workers have their plans laid out for them - new rooms, new bathrooms, re-build the kitchen.
